13 - 8:30 PM
Michel Portal MP85
He is a pioneer and major figure of European free jazz, a composer of music for multiple César-winning films, a masterful performer whose repertoire includes not only standards but also the most modern creations of our time: Portal’s career commands respect due to his boldness and open-mindedness. A complete virtuoso, he brings new direction, encourages exchanges and always seeks out encounters which will lead him off the beaten track, far from templates and clichés.
“With this lockdown, I’ve forgotten many things, even my age…” Although his will be celebrating his 85th birthday this year, Michel Portal remains no less anchored in the present and has just released MP85, a new album as a quintet comprising Bojan Zulfikarpašic (Pno), Bruno Chevillon (Cb), Lander Gyselinck (Dm) and Nils Wogram (Tb), perhaps keeping in mind the finest hours of the “Michel Portal Unit”, which welcomed in Juan in 1988 his exhilarating and soothing international quartet. "I wanted music that was happy, alive, explosive… Something open to the present instant, renewing with the pleasure of sharing and being together after all these weeks of imprisonment and solitude, music that didn’t care about styles, that chooses life, that brings the house down!" A wager brilliantly pulled off!
