Vishnu has four arms; McLaughlin has ten digits and a zen attitude, which enabled him to become one of the great crafters of legendary jazz history, notably through the memorable concerts by Shakti and by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. A model ensemble which, since its creation in 1973, has never ceased to haunt him and to surface in his music, regenerating each time its spirit and its shape. A quest in which everything is possible and nothing is ever superficial: this is the story of an insatiable/elusive musician, always on the hunt for new paths to clear.
After many years of genre-merging experiments (from rock to jazz by way of Indian music, from Miles Davis to Ravi Shankar and Trilok Gurtu, not forgetting Jimmy Hendrix, Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia and, amongst others, Santana), John McLaughlin continues to light the way, an eternal syncretic explorer, holding high the values of openness, diversity and spirituality in the midst of the often very informal magma of today’s music. « A note wants to exist », he says. « Listen to it cry as a glissando, cry at 400 decibels, sigh, jump, resonate, until it wears itself out. »
