Trombone Shorty

Troy Andrews owes his stage name to his older brother, James, who looked on, amused and attentive while young Troy, who was then only four years old, sneaked into the middle of the procession with a trombone twice his height. That was precisely because this New-Orleans child was very precocious, playing solos as early as age five in the brass bands of his home town. As well as distinguishing himself on drums and trumpet, truly gifted, he quickly became a reference on the jazz, funk and dixie scenes, but also in rock, since he has been the appointed trombonist of Lenny Kravitz for several years.

But Trombone Shorty has that special something and developed his own style, which he defines as "supafunkrock", a little miracle of funk and groove. "It’s like James Brown’s funk mixed with a New-Orleans sound, with what I do added on top of that," he confides. It’s also on stage that this 36-year-old musician with his pop-star look reveals himself and makes waves; unquestionably, this trombonist and trumpeter, whose charisma is as strong as his blowing power, is a virtuoso. Each chorus, each note played is met with enthusiasm and intensifies the shared moment of complicity between himself, the audience and the other musicians. Latest album: Parking Lot Symphony.
